The SNAP work rules

Adults 18 to 64 without an exemption can get SNAP for only 3 months in a 3 year period.

Since November 1, 2025, being homeless, a veteran, or a former foster youth aged 18 to 24 no longer exempts you.

  • You are exempt if you take part in a drug or alcohol treatment program.
  • You are exempt if you work 20 hours a week or more.
  • You are exempt if you are unable to work for medical reasons.
  • You are exempt if you live with a child under 14.
  • In a treatment program? Ask your program for a letter that confirms you are taking part, and give it to your SNAP worker.
